The Black Opal from Lightning Ridge Australia, has a body tone between N1 to N4 of the Australian Opal association body tone chart. Only these are considered to be real a Black Opal.

A black opal does not necessarily have a black back.

Crystal opals can also be black opals, if it has a dark body tone from N1 to N4

The Black Opal is usually found only in Australia. Other Opals found outside of Australia that are black in body tone, are sometimes treated ( smoked ) to look like a real Australian black Opal.

Like all Opals, the Black Opal has a brightness between B1 to B5, and comes in many different colours and patterns.
